City Meetup recap: Hidden job markets, AI, and career resilience in tech
In July, we hosted the second event in our City Meetup series at Nicoll Curtin’s London office. This is an exclusive, invitation-only gathering designed for experienced professionals across the technology and change sectors. These sessions provide a space for senior talent to share insights, gain market intelligence, and expand their networks in an open and collaborative setting.
Market insights
We opened the evening with a discussion led by our experienced consultants Paul Glover and Charlie Adey, who shared updates on the current hiring climate across both the UK and US markets.
We look at both markets, as the flow of capital, demand for talent, and market behaviours in the US often precede and influence shifts in the UK. For professionals seeking to remain competitive and forward-looking, understanding international hiring trends is becoming increasingly critical.
Roundtable discussion: Strategies for navigating career transitions
A standout element of the event was our roundtable conversation, where attendees shared practical strategies and personal experiences from their own job search journeys. The key themes were:
1. The hidden job market
Many of the most desirable roles are never advertised and stay in the hidden job markets. By proactively expanding your network and increasing your visibility, you can position yourself for opportunities that may not yet exist - simply by staying front of mind for the right people.
2. Structure during unstructured times
Job seeking can lack the routine of full-time work, but building structure into your day can help maintain motivation. A consistent schedule - including designated time for searching, networking, and wellbeing - can significantly improve focus and readiness to re-enter the workforce.
3. The value of vulnerability
Sharing your personal story with honesty and openness can foster connection and trust. Vulnerability is often a strength in a competitive job market - particularly at the senior level, where leadership and emotional intelligence go hand in hand.
4. Building credibility on LinkedIn
The LinkedIn algorithm continues to evolve, but authenticity remains key. Interact with content and people in your target network, post with confidence, and avoid over-relying on AI-generated content. Professionals can usually tell the difference, and genuine thought leadership will always stand out.
5. Navigating AI-driven job specs
Increasingly, job descriptions reflect idealised “10/10” candidate profiles. Rather than feeling discouraged, focus on articulating your transferable strengths and demonstrating where you add value. Employers are often looking for potential and adaptability, not just checklists.
6. Interview mindset: Add value, show relevance
The interview process is one of the few elements in your control as a candidate. By clearly demonstrating both your interest in the role and your ability to perform it, you can walk away knowing you've done everything possible - regardless of outcome.
Guest Speaker: A story of progress and resilience
We were also delighted to welcome back Yogesh Dalia, who attended our spring event and has since stepped into the role of Global Head of EUC. Yogesh shared his recent experience navigating the market, offering thoughtful and inspiring reflections on perseverance, mindset, and the value of professional networks.
